Workspace, you make me swoon
Submitted by Nancy aka money... on Fri, 09/07/2007 - 09:25.
Just when I was completely satisfied by workspace (is fangirl a word?) they made me swoon even further. I'm pretty passionate about my gastown neighbourhood - I think if we wanted, we could model a way for those of us with money, and those of us without, to co-exist with care and respect.
Apparently last weekend, Workspace put some cash together, bought some pizza, and gave it away to the souls congregating at pigeon park -one of Vancouver's most hard-core areas of the addicted, homeless, mentally ill and marginalized.
Workspace, you make me swoon.

B.C. Foresty, an economic powerhouse, is going to tank.
Submitted by Nancy aka money... on Tue, 09/04/2007 - 09:21.
I'm a money coach, not an economist, but my armchair take is that B.C. is going to feel the effects of the B.C. forestry industry's current woes.
Forestry still accounts for 40% of our exports, but they face the following tough challenges:
- US housing crunch = plummeting demand for lumber, and the forestry industry isn't really diversified across the globe.
- Rising energy costs = harder to turn a profit
- Pine Beetle has destroyed a decade's worth of timber
- Our rising dollar = exports in general are less attractive.

Facebook group takes on HSBC
Submitted by Nancy aka money... on Tue, 08/28/2007 - 22:30.
So apparently HSBC offered graduate students in the UK interest-free lines of credit ... then changed their policy. Whamo - a bunch of grad students are feeling the pain. Students + feeling ripped off + Facebook = pr nightmare for HSBC.
3600 students have joined the anti-HSBC group and it's growing by the hour. A live protest event is being organized via facebook on Sept. 8th.
If anyone hears how HSBC handles this, let me know!

The business of MySpace and Facebook
Submitted by Nancy aka money... on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 15:42.
You and I think of MySpace and Facebook as the place we keep in contact with people. But behind the scenes, make no mistake, these are business enterprises. Will Facebook put MySpace out of business? They may be catching up, but they’ve got a long ways to go. MySpace has a unique audience of 61 million; Facebook 19.5 million. Each visitor spent nearly 3 hours on MySpace, but only barely an hour on Facebook.

A money coach always loves a deal, and here's one:
this Sat. (Aug 18th) from 9am - noon you can get into the PNE for free. Of course, the Workspace crowd is probably going to be at barcamp (in fact, so will I!) but thought I'd pass on the intel.

Submitted by Nancy aka money... on Wed, 08/01/2007 - 08:49.
Here's a great way to enjoy the last month of summer without busting the bank: Festival Vancouver has classical and jazz concerts all over the place, including free lunch hour concerts next week, in front of the VAG. Tues Aug 7, Wed, Aug 8, Thur., Aug 9. I went last year - iced latte and a lite lunch - awesome experience.
